What is Fiber

In electronics, the term fiber usually refers to optical fibers, which are thin strands of glass or plastic that are used to transmit light signals over long distances.

Optical fibers are an important component of fiber-optic communication systems, which are used to transmit data, voice, and video signals over long distances with high bandwidth and low signal loss.

Optical fibers are made of a core, which is the central part of the fiber where the light signal travels, and a cladding, which is a layer of material that surrounds the core and helps to reflect the light signal back into the core.

The core and cladding are typically made of materials with different refractive indices, which helps to keep the light signal confined to the core and prevent it from escaping.

Fiber-optic communication systems typically use lasers or light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to generate light signals, which are then transmitted through the optical fiber.

The light signals are modulated to carry digital information, such as voice or data, and are then demodulated at the receiving end to recover the original information.

Fiber-optic communication systems offer several advantages over traditional copper-based communication systems, including:

Higher bandwidth: Optical fibers can transmit much more data than copper wires, making them ideal for high-speed data transmission.

Longer distances: Optical fibers can transmit signals over much longer distances than copper wires without significant signal loss.

Immunity to electromagnetic interference: Optical fibers are not affected by electromagnetic interference, which can be a problem with copper wires in some environments.

Security: Optical fibers are difficult to tap or intercept, making them a more secure form of communication.

In addition to fiber-optic communication systems, optical fibers are also used in other applications, such as medical devices, industrial sensing systems, and scientific instruments
